NJWA

Singer, Malaysia

NJWA, (previously known as Najwa Mahiaddin), is an award-winning vocalist and songwriter hailing from Malaysia.

Discovering music at the tender age of 3, she found a home that allowed her to fully express her thoughts through lyrics and song.

In 2011, the Malaysian “Soulstress” released her debut R&B/neo-soul album Innocent Soul which won multiple awards; Best New Artiste and Best English Local Song, “Got to Go” at the AIM 2011 awards (the Malaysian equivalent of the Grammys).

Adamant on pursuing music as a career, NJWA enrolled in the prestigious Berklee College of Music where she graduated in 2012, majoring in contemporary writing and production. NJWA then moved to New York and returned from a three-year hiatus with a darker undertone in her music, experimenting with somber and minimalistic echoes over the usual warm piano accompaniments. Thus, the Aurora EP was born; her sounds shamelessly stripped down into bare electronic setting, her soul’s deepest shadows unveiled.

Her self-titled EP, ‘NJWA’, sets a new mark, with a rich mixture of warm, analog instrumentation, with subtle infusions of electronica and mild stylistic references to local musical traditions (Indian, Chinese, Malay) – all enveloped by breezy, mesmeric vocals of a seasoned singer. This is a music tailor-made for the mighty now; tastefully eclectic, future-retro in design, worldly, yet still firmly rooted in the place of its origin.

2019 has proven to be an exciting year for NJWA. Her recent release, ‘Take Love Back’, a song about the struggles of an interracial relationship has since surpassed 100,000 streams on Spotify and NJWA played 2 slots at the Singapore Grand Prix stage.

Equally powerful on record and on stage, NJWA believes in connecting with her audience by taking them on a journey through her ethereal and mesmerizing performances. She has taken her live performances to Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. NJWA and her music are on a league of its own, set to put Malaysia on the global music map.

NJWA performed in George Town as part of George Town Festival 2018.
