Introduction

Best Known as director of the George Town Festival (GTF) , Joe Sidek has established himself as one of Malaysia’s strong advocates for the arts. GTF is an anuual month-long festival that turns the town into a brilliant canvas for local and international performances, visual arts, culture and community-infused activities.

Biography

Before taking up the position of festival director, Joe Sidek played major roles in various forms of art expression – from event management, art curator-ship, restaurant ownership and even costume design.A lesser known fact about Joe is that he still runs his family – owned textile chemical factory. Peeking into Joe's Mind

  • ….Very much in Love with Georgetown….

The spaces , the realness, then accentricities of the poeple of Penang, the new anergy, the communities, how the local people take ownership of their spaces

  • My Passion is people, really, really, people..

I discovered the nicest thing that GTF has given me, is connecting with people.

  • I love the walls of Penang. If you look at every wall, every wall is so interesting, like an artwork. That’s how we got started with the Ernest Zacharevic wall murals. It’s continuing because I like looking at the exciting canvases that Georgetown offers, wether in the form of a wall, an old door, a window or corridors.

  • Sometimes I question wether I should continue doing GTF… why not give someone else a chance, but my job is not done. The more I do it, the more I find very interesting new subjects to do, about Georgetown, about the poeple, about the places, about the history.

  • I’m very grateful. Managing GTF is the most difficult but enjoyable journey of my life…. I’m very excited about the future…find a direction, to connect South-East Asia and to make Malaysia the centre of the South-East Asia.

  • I think this love for culture and the arts is inside all of us… in Penang if you look around, our rituals and traditions, our food, creativity, artwork.. its full of culture, it’s fascinating.

  • Giving accessibility to the arts– a boy who attended a show with our community ticket emptied his pocket and put all his money into our donation box- he told me his teacher said the festival had no money- this weakened me and yet at the same time gave me strength to continue in our works for the past 9 years.

  • I sometimes worry about the future of Georgetown. If you don’t control and rein in this really fast growing energy, we may disturb the balance of Georgetown. It is a sensitive fragile place, it is small, delicate, it belongs to the people. If you start rail-roading it into a commercial product, you will lose its soul and you certainly don’t want to go in that direction
